Assume you are a manager at a local independent hospital facing serious competition for key staff.  This includes Nurses for which California Staffing Guidelines are mandatory minimums.  The competition for staff includes large corporate hospitals (Providence, Dignity), Urgent Care, and Ambulatory Care Centers.  Write in one page your suggested strategies to address your facility’s Nursing staff shortage.  Your possible responses are not limited to recruitment ideas.

Writing with Bullets Much of Business writing can be reduced to Bullet Point Narratives ❑ These are not the same as correspondence in which bullets are used to hjighlight sub-points, though much of what is below can be used in these. ❑ They are targeted business statements on narrowly focused topics. • • They are not sentences or paragraphs with dots in front of them! They have a clearly stated purpose (in sentence or paragraph format). • They are a brief statement or sub-titles E.g. Problems, Issues, Solutions They can be bold, italics or underlined ❑ Separate ideas regarding the purpose are called “Stems” • ❑ Actual Bullets are indented statements or fragments with a symbol in front. • They convey key information in support of the stem statement; E.g. Definitions, Problems and/or Solutions. • Sub-Bullets are 2nd/3rd indented fragments with different icons that support the bullet/sub-bullet directly above it. • E.g. Statistical, Financial Data or other facts directly linked to the item above them ❑ Bullets Use a Consistent Style • • • Use Sentences, fragments or questions; Capitalize each bullet point the same way; E.g. The first letter of the first word; Punctuate with period if a sentence, question mark, Semi-colon or nothing if a fragment. Solutions: • • Tech companies and Major Universities are involved in capturing, researching and interpreting massive patient data to: o Diagnose patient needs; o Determine predictability of treatment plan options. “Zero-Cost Diagnostics” by 2022 o An X-ray unit/CT scanner in a briefcase: ▪ Powered by solar/batteries; ▪ At a cost of $1 for supplies; ▪ With 1/100th the radiation. o A drop of blood or saliva that will reveal the DNA/RNA of any pathogen in the body; ▪ Newborn DNA would show: • Likelihood of disease; • Wellness steps to be taken; • Reaction to certain drugs, etc. o Obesity ▪ RNA can be used to block fat insulin receptors. o Cataracts, the leading cause of blindness (18 M cases in Africa and Asia) has simple surgical resolutions but not enough surgeons.. ▪ “Da Vinci Surgical Systems” robots allow physicians to work remotely ▪ An LA surgeon can remotely operate on a cataract in Africa in 20 minutes. o Cancer ▪ Neuro-robotics will detect, inject and destroy cancer cells at early stage. o Eldercare ▪ Robots are ready for in-home use. o Stem Cell will: ▪ Correct Rheumatoid Arthritis, MS, Colitis, Alzheimer’s, Crohn’s, Parkinson’s, stroke, etc. ▪ Drop treatment costs to 10% or less than current.
