Discussion

The discussion this week is based around an ethics audit and is probably the easiest discussion assignment in the course. 250-word (not including in-text citation and references as word count) count minimum with two scholarly sources in APA format. For the two scholarly sources, one from the textbook that’s posted below and the other one from an outside source. Let’s be sure to write it in own work 100% and give credit appropriately when using someone’s else work.

Using your own organization or one with which you are personally familiar, take the Corporate Culture Ethics Audit on p. 188.

1) Briefly describe the organization and report the score (the number of “yes” answers).

2) Choose one of the questions which received a “no” answer, and describe why that question is important.

3) Discuss the changes you would recommend over the course of one year to ensure that question would receive a “yes” answer in the future. The post should be a minimum of 250 words and your recommendation(s) should be supported with evidence from a minimum of two sources, including the book.

Update the subject line of the initial post so that it reflects what you are writing about.

I recommend not choosing the question about happiness, job satisfaction, and turnover. Why? First, the question is really asking about three separate variables. Second, those variables can be affected by a number of factors that are not related to ethics.

Whatever audit question you choose, the recommendations should address the ethical aspects of that question. For example, employee turnover and job satisfaction might be influenced by low wages. Increasing compensation might reduce turnover and increase satisfaction, but that solution is more directly related to the management and organizational behavior courses. For this discussion, it is more important to address the factors that influence the relationship between ethics and turnover and/or the relationship between ethics and satisfaction.

Complete

1,300 word count and there is a total of 4 questions (not including in-text citation and references as the word count), a minimum of three scholarly sources are required in APA format. For the three scholarly sources, one from the textbook that’s posted below and the other two from an outside source. Let’s be sure to write it in own work 100% and give appropriately when using someone’s else work.

The Complete assignments follow the assigned material fairly closely, focusing on organizational culture and on developing and managing ethics programs in the organization.

Outside sources are required for Q1. Two articles are posted in the Unit 4 Course Materials.

Note that the library has made some changes to its website. EBSCO datebase Then scroll down the page and click on the “Criminal Justice” tab. Select “Opposing Viewpoints in Context,” and search for “Wells Fargo.” Then select “News” and sort the results by date.

Q2 and Q4 might both benefit from the use of outside sources, but they are not required.

Q3 can be answered fully using information from the Read and Attend sections of the course.

1.Organizational Culture at Wells Fargo

“Explicit statements of values, beliefs, and customs usually come from upper management [and] are all formal expressions of an organization’s culture” (Ferrell, Fraedrich & Ferrell, 2013, p. 184). Review Wells Fargo’s stated ethical values in Table 7.1, and answer the following:

1) How do Wells Fargo’s stated ethical values compare with the scandal that was revealed in September 2016, in which Wells Fargo opened and/or applied for more than 2 million credit cards and bank accounts without customers’ knowledge or approval, or more recent claims that Wells Fargo modified mortgages without customer permission?

Hint: EBSCO datebase Select “opposing viewpoints in context,” and search for the Wells Fargo scandal. Select “news” and sort the results by date.

2. Codes of Conduct

Review the material on Codes of Conduct in Chapter Eight. Then read the debate issue on page 223. Clearly state whether you think:

1) Poorly written (or absent) codes of conduct help explain the widespread misconduct that has been prevalent in the financial industry, or
2) Codes of conduct are only a small part of the ethical culture of an organization and do little to explain the misconduct in the financial industry.

Explain your answer.

3. An Ethical Dilemma – Butterfly Industries

Read the Butterfly Industries scenario on pp. 239-240. Put yourself in Chantal’s position, charged with creating an ethics committee, and answer the following:

1) How can the steps in Chapter Eight help the committee create an effective ethics program?
2) What material from Chapter Nine can be used to manage the program once it is implemented?

4. Ethics Audits

Read the Chapter Nine debate issue on page 263. Clearly state whether you think

1) The BBB Torch Award criteria represented the best audit method for a smaller company, or
2) The audit represent in Table 9.5 offers a better way.

Explain your answer.

Extra Credit

1) Watch at least half of the documentary, “The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power.” It is a long documentary by the Canadian filmmaker Joel Bakan. Focusing on US corporations, the film traces their evolution “from a . . . a government-chartered institution meant to affect specific public functions, to the rise of the modern commercial institution entitled to most of the legal rights of a person.”

Here’s the link:

http://freedocumentaries.org/documentary/the-corporation

Bakan makes a case that the corporation is incapable of acting responsibly or ethically. Instead, he argues that the misbehavior we see is consistent with the way corporations are legally defined – as rational, immortal, amoral, non-human persons charged with the primary goal of creating shareholder wealth. It is interesting that the legal definition of corporations as a “person” was based on a curious interpretation of the 14th Amendment, an amendment that was ratified in 1868, not to impact corporations but to ensure the rights of freed slaves.

Bakan’s argument is similar to the argument in Unit 3 that white collar crime is the result of an underlying psychological disorder. He sounds anti-capitalist in certain parts of the film but mostly the argument is against corporations rather than against free market competition. There’s a lot to think about, plenty to disagree with, and it’s always interesting to see how the US is viewed from the outside.

2) Write a one page response (300-400 words) indicating how the film helps (or doesn’t help) create a better understanding of the limits of culture and ethics programs in influencing the ethical behavior of the organization. Follow APA requirements for a cover page and reference page.

Assignment Writing and Presentation Guidelines.

There are three major areas to be considered when preparing an assignment – content, format and referencing

  1. Content

When writing a formal assignment, any headings should follow the APA style guide, should not be written in point form, but should follow a series of logical steps.

The first step, when writing an assignment, is to make sure you understand the essay topic and identify the main points to be answered within the paper

  1. Format

An assignment should be formatted in such a way that makes it a pleasure to read and grade. Untidy presentation and inconsistency in format can reduce the ease of reading the assignment and therefore make it difficult to assess the content. This can result in a reduced grade.

  1. Referencing

The Faculty of Nursing use the APA style for all referencing. Your citations and reference list MUST be set out correctly in this format.

Do not rely on the inbuilt APA formatting option which is available with many word processing programs – they do not all meet the requirements spelled out.

Different types of assignments

Essays – structuring an argument with evidence from literature in relation to specific modules

Reports – written in a structured way in response to a need for information

Critiques – comparing and contrasting material using critical thinking

Reflective writing– taking practice to learning (thinking critically about your nursing practice in relation to what you have learnt in the classroom)

Developing an effective writing style using a three-pronged strategy:

Use of straightforward language

Use of short or medium length sentences

Use of other people

Plagiarism:

The APA guide for referencing clearly indicates that one cannot present another’s ideas as his own. It must be noted that whether paraphrasing, quoting an author directly, or describing an idea that influenced your work, one must credit the source.
