Textbook:  Research Methods in Psychology by Beth Morling
Chapter 10:  Introduction to Simple Experiments

The topic for this week is “Introducing Simple Experiments” and this discussion will give you a chance to play around with your own experimental design.  Come up with a topic that interests you (it doesn’t have to be specifically related to psychology) and design an experiment!  After you have generated a clear experiment idea and design, describe your experiment by answering the following questions:

1.  What are you researching; in other words what is your hypothesis?  Explain.
2.  What is the Independent Variable (IV) (and levels of the IV) and what is the Dependent Variable (DV) ?
3.  How will you select your participants?  Describe your methods and procedures.
4.  Is your experiment an independent group or within groups design?
5.  Is your experiment a pretest/posttest design, posttest only design, repeated measures design, or concurrent measures design?
6.  What are your control variables?  Are there any confounding variables?
7.  What else will you do to ensure internal validity?  (think covariance, temporal precedence, counterbalancing, etc.
