An argument is a position a researcher takes to defend their dissertation. Bridges et al., (2020) noted the objective is for the researcher to show he or she is as an expert on the topic of choice. The researcher presents reasons why the research is conducted based on evidence from prior research. This will support their position and will show whether or not the researcher understands the topic they chose, (e.g. why they used the theory or models and the target population). An argument provides a reader an understanding of the researcher’s point of view (Bridges et al., 2020).An argument allows for a scholarly conversation by sharing new knowledge and contributing to the existing literature related to the topic. Other researchers can read the research which might lead to another study to be conducted. Scholarly conversation continues through the use of citations and evidence allowing for more integration of ideas from other authors (Bridges et al., 2020).

A researcher’s argument or claim is the focal point of their entire study. Defending the claim is no easy task. While researchers generally choose a topic that they are passionate about, the claim needs to be structured in a way that will lead to having open academic dialogues and conversations. This is essential to the dissertation process and in establishing oneself as a researcher. Our text states that a well-developed argument assists the reader in better understanding the position and perspective of the researcher and their topic (Bridges et al, 2020). The argument should also be supported by preexisting research and evidence that has been published and peer reviewed to ensure its validity and academic standing. It is vital that an argument is rooted in evidence and research-based claims and not rooted in personal opinions and biases of the researcher. If the research and the claim are surrounded by opinion-based claims and unsupported evidence, it will be almost impossible for the researcher to be able to defend their stance and perspective. A major part of the dissertation process is being able to defend your claim and the research that accompanies your study. The ability to defend your stance with research-based evidence and supporting literature, is what distinguishes an individual as a researcher and an expert in their field of study. Defending your claim does not mean that an argument or competition is won but rather the research and its findings speak for themselves and are not shrouded in any doubt or inconsistencies.

My potential topic emerges from an important problem that needs to be investigated. In the United States the educational achievement gap between minority and majority students is an on going dilemma (Braun, et al., 2006). Studies have found the gaps to be consistent, intense, and prevalent (Braun, et al., 2006).     The benefits of studying this specific problem are, that insight, and knowledge will be given on reasons for the academic achievement gaps within minority educational settings, and possible solutions to bridge those academic gaps.    The emperical sources that I have read provides literature, that informs the topic, and the problem, by giving data and additioal information, on the topic. The emperical sources that I have read, argued in defense of why the problem needs to be investigated, by presenting the problem, and providing scholarly information through research, to defend the argument.     The literature review influences the development of the argument for my potential study by defining and demonstrating problems in research, problems in prior studies, inquiries from previous research, reviewing existing literature, and combining new research.

The topic chosen for my field of study now inclusive of Leadership in Health Administration. The benefit of studying this topic and linking it to Native American Health or Indian Health Service in general was based on the research read. There is a lack of patient representation in leadership teams within a hospital. Another area connecting the lack of patient representation is the type of leadership style (e.g. servant, transformational, etc.) in rural health care and how they play a role in patient satisfaction in quality care. The literature review provide evidence on barriers to improving quality of care so trends are analyzed in ambulatory care and physician reports (Sequist et al., 2011). The Indian Health Service provides health care to Native Americans with a small budget to support 50% of the Native American population. Because of this small amount, there are health disparities among the Navajo American communities. To address some of these disparities, one clinic incorporated cultural aspects of its patient-centered care using the Office of Native Medicine (Joe et al., 2016) The ONM is to help patients needing a voice in decision making to ensure they are provided quality care. There is a broad spectrum in how individuals struggle within their own health care processes such as time of service, healthcare insurance, turn-over of providers, and type of services provided in rural areas. The literature review clearly shows evidence of what has been discovered and what remains to be found (Lentz, 2020).
