When preparing an assignment, three major factors must be considered: content, format, and referencing.

1. Content

When writing a formal assignment, any headings should adhere to the APA style guide and be written in a series of logical steps rather than in point form.

When writing an assignment, the first step is to ensure that you understand the essay topic and identify the main points to be addressed within the paper.

2. Structure

An assignment should be formatted so that it is enjoyable to read and grade. Untidy presentation and inconsistency in format can make it difficult to read the assignment and thus assess the content. This may result in a lower grade.

3. References

For all referencing, the Faculty of Nursing follows the APA style. In this format, your citations and reference list MUST be properly formatted.

Do not rely on the built-in APA formatting option found in many word processing programs; it does not always meet the requirements.

Assignments of various types

Essays – constructing an argument based on evidence from literature in relation to specific modules.

Reports – written in a structured manner in response to a need for information

Critiques are used to compare and contrast material by employing critical thinking.

Reflective writing– applying practice to learning (thinking critically about your nursing practice in relation to what you have learnt in the classroom)

Creating an effective writing style with a three-pronged approach:

Use of short or medium-length sentences

According to the APA referencing guide, it is not permissible to present another person’s ideas as one’s own. It should be noted that whether paraphrasing, directly quoting an author, or describing an idea that influenced your work, the source must be credited.
