Looking back to when our class started, I mentioned in our first discussion that one of my main goals in taking this class is to learn how to understand our society: how it functions and how it affects our lives. Now that we’re on our last week, I can say that I have achieved this goal. Through our discussions and the information presented by our textbook, I have learned to view things in a different light and understood how society affects us and vice versa. The topic that stood out to me the most is our topic regarding inequities in our society. The facts presented by our book and the evidences provided by Tim Wise in the film White Like Mechallenged my beliefs and made me question my views regarding equality and success. I finally understood that history and existing biases play a big part in a person’s road to prosperity. I learned the importance of sociological imagination, placing myself in our people’s shoes. I have learned to see through my biases, and recognized the existing inequities hiding behind the concept of false equality. That homeless person that I always pass by on my way to work, or that person cleaning the streets were perhaps caused by society to be trapped in their current situations. I realized that there were several factors that might have led to their present circumstances. Lack of determination and desire to succeed are not the only reasons. Hard work and determination are some of the ingredients of success, but let’s not forget other significant factors such as access to better education and job opportunities. Let’s be aware/conscious about the ongoing injustices and disparities in our society. For social awareness allows us to recognize the need of others and to take into consideration the consequences of our actions.

To be honest this sociology class has opened my mind more I’m not saying that it was opened before but now I understand the structure just a little bit but, I find it interesting how everything shapes our life. Especially what impacted me the most is the documentary from Tim Wise “ White like me”. I even showed my parents about the film so I made them watch it. This topic had a very emotional effect on me because I’m just thinking why are people color blind rather than being color conscious. White people always had privilege in this country. They are unaware of other races because they are the dominant race in our society. Just because we had a black president doesn’t mean racial inequalities stop but most people have an ideology that it stop but it alive. This is really sad. The structure of our government is why we are like this today. We breathe racism is around us. When we wake up there racism going on and when we sleep it’s going in a non ending factor. I’m saddened but its the real world how other ethnicity are treated bad and some have a gold spoon in their hands. My dad worked in a field in Fresno at the age of 23 when my mom at 17 was pregnant of me. He tells me incidents that happened to him while he was there like his boss spit in his face just because my dad was Hispanic. Regardless of color, we have the responsibility to stand up to the abuse committed against others. I always say Not all people are bad nor all people are good. We are just not informed of what’s around us or we don’t want to think about the situation at hand. All this is connect to our everyday life because we live in this world that there’s things always happening. History always repeats itself it’s like a chain always growing but we need to cut it. We can’t let our kids to grow up like that. Every little things that happens in our society impacts us in a good way or bad way. If we as a community in the society don’t speak up then who will.
